Diva's guide to fall's fashion must-haves

Remember when fall meant hitting the mall with your mom in search of the perfect back to school outfit that would instantly transform you into the most sought-after girl in junior high?

Well, fall is right around the corner and just because you're not heading back to school doesn't mean you can't hit the shops in search of fall trends that will make you feel like a schoolgirl again.

Okay, maybe not exactly like a schoolgirl. I mean, there are some cool, wearable trends on offer this fall but they aren't, you know, magic clothes.

And really, who wants to feel like a schoolgirl again anyway? Not me. I was many years removed from academia before I got truly in touch with my diva side.

But it's not about me anyway. It's about the clothes. I picked 10 fall fashion must haves from Elle magazine's September 2008 issue and I'm gonna look at five this week. Ready? Let's do this thing.

Click on over to my Shooting for Hip column at Better Than a Playdate to read the rest.

well, I'm over here at Abecrombie emptying my wallet and wondering why my girls have been sucked into this hellhole...

Why can't they just shop at Target like every other normal person? (I've tried to discuss this with them, but have you ever tried to have conversations with hormone raging 16 and 18 year old girls? right. )

I'll all over the pencil skirt, but I'm with you on the others......leather pants? colored fur? pastel anything? not a chance.

Yes, the days of leather pants are definitely long gone...

Now talk to me about leather BAGS and you have my attention.

Okay, these shorts are starting to look a bit washed out. Sigh. I'll pop on bye and see what I should be buying....

Hi I arrived via POTD. This made me smile as we had a chilly morning on Sunday and I said to my husband it was like a "back to school morning." I remembered the stiff collar on my new school blouse, socks that were still white and my new jumper that didn't have bobbles on it yet. Debs x

Over from David's .. and I am a NY Fashionista .. except for the fur I love pretty much all the Fall fashions .. as for the cropped trousers .. they arent new and in warm weather you wear 'em with either HIGH heels or flats .. depending on the look .. and in winter you wear 'em with boots .. ankle high boots .. or dress 'em up with HIGH heels on days w/o snow or rain or slush

Great list but being that I use to be a technical designer for a leather company, I will say that anyone can wear leather pants - they just have to 'fit' right :) (Don't squeeze legs into shiny black leather people.)

And faux fur, I can't wait.

Great review of those fashions. I agree wholeheartedly.

Love this column, and adore the pencil skirt myself. I have a fabulously faux fur ivory jacket that's very 40s in style, and I can't wait to pair it with a charcoal colored pencil skirt and channel film noir...
