Little pitchers

Last night, out of the blue, Graham taught me how powerful just a few carefully-chosen words can be.

"Mommy, you are my very best friend."

And I felt my eyes well and my heart swell and I gently kissed his forehead.

"What a nice thing to say sweetie, thank you."

And Graham smiled sweetly in return.

"You're welcome mommy. You are my very best friend because you are really pretty and also, you almost never say damnit."

Oh yes he did.

Last night Graham taught me that Mommy needs to choose her words just a little more carefully.

  8. Oh that is to funny. I've heard my girls say that very word. It really made me realize that I do need to be more careful about what I say.

  9. LOVE IT!!! My bad word is "Crap" and it is not that bad, but also not what I want my three-year-old repeated at preschool either :)

  11. What a funny boy.
Good luck trying to get him to stop saying damnit. I choose my words much more carefully than I used to but am still paying for a few uncarfully chosen words.

  16. Thanks for that reminder :-)
I have a habit of cursing freely around Ethan, seeing as how he is hearing impaired and nonverbal I think I can get away with it....but I really ought to step it up I think.

  17. Oh you don't even want to know the things my girls repeat. Because my daddy was a Greek sailor and it definitely trickled down!

  18. One morning, Ben asked innocently if I'd managed to put on my cranky pants. I *was* cranky, as a matter of fact.

  19. I am afraid to say that he wouldn't like me very much. Which is a shame, because I almost always have candy. :)

  21. I'm with crazymumma. I'm pretty sure if mine could make an "f" sound "fuckers" would be one of his first words.

    *hangs head in shame*

  22. If we are ever caught swearing around my friend's 5 year old she will retort, "we don't say fuck!" or "we don't say shit!" in the most matter of fact way possible.
    Very cute.

  24. What an awesome way to turn a tender moment into a "WHA!?!?!" I once told my then-2yo daughter that I was saying "Down it" when she asked what dammit meant. Hey, it didn't make sense, but I got away with it!

  25. Heh. That is so cute.

  41. Dang it. Kids are so much more sophisticated these days. Remember when "because you have me an oreo" was good enough reason to be best friends? Now I have to kind of watch my language??

  42. He knows how to choose his friends.
No foul mouthed girl is gonna win him over!

  43. Oh how I love it!
Those are the best words in the world. Until, sometimes, you hear them about 100 times in the same day. Or your child completely knows you think they're the best words in the world and completely use it to their advantage.
And finally, when you realize that they've hit the "very best friend" phase - that in which almost every person they encounter is their very best friend for some (sometime quite humorous and obscure) reason or another.
    Priceless!
Oh, and did you guess that we're in that phase, right about, say, NOW?

    ReplyDelete
  44. love it!!! I love how they say whatever is on their mind, totally uncensored.

I need to be careful with my words too, a couple little "bleeps" have slipped out lately!

  45. Kindness and beauty what more could a guy want in a best friend after all?
My daughter once offered, at about 6, that she wanted to marry a tall, cheerful and polite boy. Fair enough...we are smarter I think when we are littler
