Last Friday.
It is past midnight. Graham and I are laying together on a double bed at my parent's house, a novelty which so excites him he has resisted sleep for hours. I am weary. Past weary. Cuddles and whispered endearments have long since given way to hissed admonishments.
"Mama?"
"Shush."
"Isn't it soooo fun to sleep on mommy's bed?"
"Shush!"
"Mama?"
"SHUSH!"
"Mama?"
"Go to sleep."
"Sorry mama."
"Sorry 'bout that."
"Mama?."
"We can talk tomorrow."
"But mama-"
"Tomorrow Graham!"
"Mama?"
"Shush Graham, go to sleep!"
"But mama-"
"WHAT?! WHAT IS SO IMPORTANT IT CAN'T WAIT FOR MORNING!"
"Mama, I just wanted to tell you that your hair looks terrific and that you are pretty like a princess."
"Oh...okay...well, thank you."
"Mama?"
"Yes Graham."
"Isn't it sooo fun to sleep on mommy's bed?"
"Yes Graham. Yes, it is."
Totally worth it. ;) Such a sweet kiddo.
ReplyDeleteThey know just how to speak to our hearts, don't they?!
ReplyDeleteMy heart's now all atwitter.
ReplyDeleteAnd so, the debate on co-sleeping has ended. Graham wins.
ReplyDeleteHa...too funny. My daughter does the same sort of thing. She gives me an endless stream of "mommy mommy mommy" and then just when I'm totally exasperated with her she throws in an "I love you" or sometimes "Mommy, I'm going to be your friend forEVER!" and I completely melt right there on the spot.
ReplyDeleteWorth it, for sure!
Wonderful...
ReplyDeleteEven though my 6 year old doesn't necessarily MEAN all the things he says to me to avoid going to sleep and to just stall in general, I still enjoy hearing them and knowing that he is constantly learning how to sweet talk a lady.
KEEP BELIEVING
What a sweetheart! Sounds like he is totally going to be trouble!
ReplyDeleteThey always know just what to say.
ReplyDeleteSometimes they are so sweet, despite themselves.
ReplyDeleteWhat a little charmer! ;)
ReplyDeleteOh you are totally describing my little JL. He can never seem to get to sleep. Just one more drink. Just one more pillow adjustment. Out of his bed... Mama, I just wanted to give you this.... (he hugs me). I'm like, okay that could've waited until morning. But thanks.
ReplyDeletethat's too precious. so sweet.
ReplyDeleteLOL - my ears immediately perk up too when my girls say nice things about me...but then I ignore the rest of their rantings afterward. Gosh, who do they think I am to care that they're starving or needing to pee?
ReplyDeleteI want a compliment like that!
ReplyDeleteI freakin love your kid.
ReplyDeleteIf you're going to be sleep deprived it might as well be for a really great compliment!
ReplyDeleteYep, it sure is...what a cutie.
ReplyDeleteYou give in so easily! lol
ReplyDeleteSo sweet though - hard to resist when they say things like that though.
How sweet is that!
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet story.
ReplyDeleteSounds like somebody is learning early that a way to a woman's heart is by complimenting her hair and telling her she looks like a princess!
ReplyDeleteWhen Sassy was little and in bed with me once, she turned sleepily and looked me in the eye. I was waiting for a soft, sleepy goodnight - and she suddenly burst into the song "This Land is Your Land!" At the top of her lungs! I almost fell off the bed. (I'm laughing right now remember that hysterical night.) sigh...
ReplyDeleteThat WAS worth it! :)
ReplyDeleteDude's gonna be trouble with the ladies when he grows up.
ReplyDeleteOmg that's so sweet ... and very funny. lol. Dragon is the exact same way when he sleeps next to me or hubby.
ReplyDeleteHe just smushed my heart! That is oh so sweet.
ReplyDeleteThat's adorable! Don't you love how they always know how to tug at those heartstrings??

ReplyDeleteI had to share a bed with my 2 year old when we were in florida for disney world. so she was co-sleeping with us for 7 days straight. as you can imagine, it was tough to get her back on her schedule but it was really fun to wake up with her everyday. we are not too strict with that so one or two nights, you will definitely catch our daughter happily waking up in our bed.

ReplyDeleteWhat a sweetheart. Those are the moments that you realize it's time to slow down and savor every moment!
ReplyDeleteThat. Is. Priceless.
ReplyDeleteObviously, you are still in a puddle on the bed. Sweet.
ReplyDeleteAwwww...and then you end up feeling like an ogre. My son does that to me in the grocery store.
ReplyDeleteAt bedtime, Johnny and I lay together in my bed and talk about our day. I've come to look forward to hearing what his favorite part of the day was.
What a kid! I love it when they compliment you out of the blue-- so sweet!
ReplyDeleteYes, definitely worth it!
ReplyDeleteSometimes I let my 6 year old stay up a lot later than he should because I like the time with him...we have some good talks late at night in a quiet house.
oh they do know how to turn it on, don't they?
ReplyDeleteFlattery will get him everywhere.
ReplyDeleteThat is EXACTLY the kind of thing my son does too.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to you when he's older... you'll have girls coming left, right, centre and from behind! ;)
ReplyDeletehehe I have so been there, at the end of my patience when she says something incredible after I snap at her ... yup.
ReplyDeleteYour son is amazing!
So sweet. Almost worth it the lack of sleep.
ReplyDeleteHow sweet!
ReplyDeleteOh man does this kid have women figured out to a T. He's going to be such a lady killer.
ReplyDeleteHe is adorable.
These boys really know how to slay us. That was adorable.
ReplyDeleteLittle kids know how to work it, don't they? haha!
ReplyDeleteHe's a natural-born charmer!
ReplyDeleteHey, I blogged about airplanes yesterday!
Whenever I start getting impatient is when mine tells me she loves me and I'm the BEST. Sneaky little monkeys.
ReplyDeleteAwwww, what a dear. (And a mommy heart is chastised.)
ReplyDeleteOooh, they are so good at that sweet talk in the middle of the night. What a cutie, hope you got some sleep.
ReplyDeleteSweetness like that is worth needing extra caffeine in the morning. What a sweetie!
ReplyDeleteOH that was TOO cute!
ReplyDeleteIsn't that just like those kids?!? I was ready to scream bloody murder when the girls came out of their room yet again, only to learn one of them had a bloody nose!
ReplyDeleteI remember once I was in a hotel room with my mom and my littlest brother (he was maybe 2 at the time), it was after I'd done an overnight program at the university I wanted to attend. It was waaaaay past his bedtime, and the little guy was crawling around on the bed with my mom, barking and panting like a puppy, and he kept licking her. We were too amused to be annoyed. It was one of the cutest things ever.
ReplyDeleteYou have to print that conversation out and tuck it away for safe keeping. It's definitely a keeper.
